Daan and Sophie are most popular Dutch children’s names

January 13, 2015

Daan and Sophie have overtaken Tess and Sem as the most popular names for babies born in the Netherlands.

The list is compiled every year by the social insurance bank SVB which pays the child benefits every family is entitled to.

Daan replaced Sem at the top of the list for 2014, following 2013’s fourth position and first place in 2011 and 2012. Sem, for years in the top three, slipped to fourth place behind Bram and Milan.

Sophie was followed by Emma and Julia which have all been in the top three for many years with the exception of 2008 and 2013.

Some 174,000 children were born in the Netherlands last year: 89,000 boys and 85,000 girls.

Among the more imaginative names the SVB recorded in 2014 were Goudberg, Diamantino, Drizz and G-Lion for boys and Ocean-leeblue, Sensabiel, Anjolaoluwa and Dyazmillia for girls.
