Arjen Robben and Ireen Wüst are sportsman and woman of the year
Footballer Arjen Robben and speed skater Ireen Wüst have been voted Dutch sportsman and woman of 2014 by a professional jury and their peers at a glittering ceremony in Amsterdam.
Robben, who plays for Bayern München, beat off strong competition from a string of skaters and gymnast Epke Zonderland, who took the title for the previous three years.
The last time a football player was named sportsman of the year was in 1987, when Ruud Gullit took the honours.
Wüst also won the title in 2006. The 28-year-old has a very successful year, winning two gold and three silver medals at the Winter Olympic as well as the European and World all-round titles.
The Dutch men’s football team was awarded the team of the year prize with Oranje coach Louis van Gaal as coach of the year.
In typical understated style, Van Gaal said he was accepting the award with mixed feelings. ‘After all, we did not win anything,’ he said. Oranje did come a surprise third in the World Cup.
Bibian Mentel was named Paralympian of the year. She won a snowboarding gold at the Paralympics.
