French police arrest 95 Ajax supporters ahead of Paris Saint Germain match
French police have picked up 95 supporters of Amsterdam football club Ajax ahead of Tuesday night’s key Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.
According to French media reports, some of the supporters were carrying iron bars, knuckle dusters and balaclavas and were intending to fight French football fans. They were arrested in a bar in central Paris on Monday night.
None had tickets for the match. France’s home affairs minister had already banned Ajax supporters from coming to Paris without a ticket
‘There is a strong rivalry between French and Dutch hooligans,’ a ministry spokesman told news agency Reuters. Police released 41 supporters overnight while 54 remained in custody.
Only 850 Ajax fans have been authorised to travel to Paris and will be under police supervision while in the city.
Ajax only have two points from four games in Group F and cannot catch Paris (10) or Barcelona (9). However, the Amsterdammers could clinch a Europa League place if they win and APOEL, who are bottom of the group with one point, lose to Barcelona.
