The Netherlands risks becoming a more polarised society
The well-educated and low-skilled in the Netherlands are living more and more in separate worlds, leading to ‘feelings of unease’, according to a new report published on Thursday by two government think tanks.
The two groups also have different opinions about immigrants, the EU and politics in general, the report says.
The social policy unit SCP and government policy council WRR say these two sectors of society have separate social networks and largely have contact with people with a similar skill set. They also usually set up home with someone from a similar educational background.
‘Social and technological advances make it much easier to avoid each other than it used to be,’ the report says. There is a very real risk that the two sides will increasingly avoid each other, the report concludes.
