Explosion at biomass power station, no one injured
A power station in Geertruidenberg in Noord-Brabant province was rocked by an explosion on Wednesday but no one was injured in the blast.
The explosion, at around 12.45 hours, is thought to have taken place when one of the biomass silos was being filled. The power station produces energy from biomass and coal.
Some 30 fire engines – some brought in from Breda – and a fire boat were involved in fighting the ensuing blaze, which was not under control by 16.00 hours.
Locals have been told to keep their doors and windows shut because of the smoke, which is not thought to contain any dangerous substances.
The cause of the blast is still unclear. Fire brigade officials told Nos television that the problems began on a conveyer belt feeding the silos with wood chips. Essent has said it does not yet know what caused the explosion.
The Amercentrale power plant is one of Essent’s biggest electricity producing locations.
