Dutch TV group Talpa takes Utopia to China

Dutch television production house Talpa has signed a deal with Chinese internet giant Tencent to develop Chinese versions of popular reality shows such as Utopia, the Financieele Dagblad says on Thursday.

The programmes will appear on Tencent’s online video platform, the FD says. Tencent is the second biggest internet company in China, after Alibaba, with 500 million mobile phone clients and a stock exchange valuation of €110bn. Financial details were not disclosed.

Talpa recently launched a new show in the Netherlands, Born to Bloom in which 15 florists compete against each other.

In Utopia, 15 individuals get one year to build an entirely new society from scratch. The format recently launched in the US and has also been sold to Turkey, Germany, Romania and Canada.

The FD said last week that Talpa’s owner, media mogul John de Mol, had put the company up for sale.
