The Netherlands’ oldest man turns 108

The Netherlands’ oldest man, Serop Mirzoyan, celebrates his 108th birthday on Tuesday at the home in Amersfoort he shares with his daughter.

Mirzoyan is Armenian and was born in 1906 in Turkey. He worked in Iraq as a farmer and moved to the Netherlands in 1996. Because he only knew his birth year, he was given the birthday of July 1.

His fragile health means the birthday celebrations will be kept small, but Amersfoort mayor Lucas Bolsius will be there.

The oldest Dutch person is Egbertje Leutscher-De Vries from Havelte in Drenthe. She is 111.
