A further 700 jobs will be scrapped in the prison system, according to an internal briefing by junior justice minister Fred Teeven acquired by the Telegraaf.

On Monday, Teeven sent a briefing about the prison system to parliament but, according to the Telegraaf, he left out the part about more job losses.

Some 2,000 jobs have already gone since the government announced cuts of €340m in the prison system budget.

In his briefing, Teeven told parliament that Dutch prisons are becoming increasingly empty, making it necessary to find additional savings of €60m, the Telegraaf reports. However, he did not say how many extra job losses this would entail.

The new round of cuts will not see any extra prisons closed, but creative activities will be scrapped, sport periods will be limited and libraries will be digitalised. This will lead to the loss of around 700 jobs, the Telegraaf says.
