Overnight storms leave on person dead and localised flooding

A man was killed in Amsterdam in the early hours of Friday morning when the bus shelter he was hiding from the storm in was hit by a falling tree.

The tree, on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal close to the palace, was hit by lightning, the paper said. The man has not yet been identified but died at the scene.

The tree also brought down overhead power cables, causing disruption to tram services. In other parts of the city, falling trees also affected traffic.

The heavy rain also led to localised flooding in some areas, mainly in the south, news agency ANP said.

Residents on the ground floor of a nursing home in the Limburg town of Herkenbosch had to move to the first floor because of the water.

The KNMI weather bureau had issued a code yellow storm warning for Limburg, Gelderland and Brabant.
