First Ukraine air crash victims expected in NL on Wednesday

The first plane carrying victims of the MH17 air disaster in Ukraine will hopefully arrive back in the Netherlands on Wednesday, prime minister Mark Rutte has told reporters.

The Hercules plane will land in Eindhoven, from where the bodies will be taken to the Korporaal Van Oudheusden barracks in Hilversum. Relatives will be informed as soon as identification has taken place but this may take months in some cases, Rutte said.

It is still unclear how many bodies have been recovered so far and taken by train to Kharhiv, Ukraine’s second city, to be flown to the Netherlands.

A Boeing C-17 provided by the Australian government will also be used to bring bodies to the Netherlands, where Dutch experts are leading the identification team, Rutte said.
