Dutch World Cup success may lead to Feyenoord talent drain

Four of the five Feyenoord players included in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad are in the running to move to other clubs, the Volkskrant said on Tuesday.

Daryl Janmaat is on the verge of signing a contract with Newcastle United and other clubs have their eyes on Stefan de Vrij, Bruno Martins Indi and Jordy Clasie, the Volkskrant says.

The Rotterdam club’s technical director Martin van Geel is already making plans to compensate for losing so many top players by bringing in Khalid Boulahrouz, a 32-year-old ex international, to help develop younger talented players.

Speculation

Van Geel has so far refused to speculate about who may be leaving. It is not in the interests of the club, a spokesman said. ‘The situation can change every hour.’

One deal already signed is the transfer of Graziano Pelle, who is following former coach Ronald Koeman to Southampton. The transfer season ends in September.

Feyenoord ended second in the Dutch premier division last year and will take part in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League. The draw for that event takes place on Friday.
