Junior agriculture minister Sharon Dijksma is not prepared to compensate IJsselmeer fishermen for losses they incur because of new fish quotas.

Fish stocks in the IJsselmeer are at an all-time low and fishing for perch, bream and bass will be limited for the next three years to allow them to recover, broadcaster Nos repored.

Fisherman are afraid they will go bankrupt and wanted Dijksma to ‘buy out’ some of their number. The fishing bond said this will cost €10m to €15m.

Dijksma offered compensation for one year, but negotiations ended in acrimony.

Now the minister has told parliament she wants to revive an earlier offer: the fish quota will go down by 40% and there will be no compensation.

Parliament will discuss the IJsselmeer fishing industry on Wednesday.
