A Jewish campaigning group has gone to court in Utrecht calling on the Dutch football association to stamp out chanting by fans about Jews.

The foundation to combat anti-semitism says the KNVB should have to pay a fine of €1m for every match at which it does not take action to stop the chanting.

The fine should also apply to Ajax fans, who call themselves Jews, the foundation says in the AD. Both using the world Jew as an insult or as a nickname should be punished, the organisation says.

The law case stems from this year’s KNVB Cup final between PEC Zwolle and Ajax, in which fans from both clubs chanted about Jews.

The foundation says it is easier for the football association to intervene than individual clubs because they do not have to take their own fans into account.
