The chaos around the main railway stations caused by parked bikes is expected to get worse as the improvement in the economy continues, the AD reports.

ProRail, which runs the tracks and stations, estimates the shortage of parking places for bikes will increase to 60,000 by 2030, despite a government investment of €220m in 100,000 new racks, the paper says.

The government is not prepared to invest any more in bike racks and it is now the responsibility of local councils, a government spokesman told the paper.

Transport minister Wilma Mansveld is to discuss the problem with councils, ProRail, the NS rail company and the cyclists’ association Fietsersbond next year, according to the AD.

Around 40% of train passengers, some half a million people, cycle to the station each day.
