Hotel stays increase but get shorter

The Netherlands saw an increase in hotel guests of 2.4% to 21.5 million in 2013, according to figures published on Tuesday by the central statistics agency CBS.

The number of hotel guests rose by around half a million. The total made up of 10 million guests from abroad (a 3% increase) and 11.5 million from the Netherlands (up 1.9%).

The provinces of Drenthe, Zuid-Holland and Noord-Holland saw the biggest rises, with 10.9%, 7.3% and 6.6% respectively.

However, the figures show that guests made shorter stays than in 2012, the CBS says. The rise in nights in a hotel rose 2.3%, but this was less than the 2.4% increase in guest numbers.

Friesland province had the shortest stays, with nearly 3% more guests but drop in over-night stays of 3.8%.
