Ajax celebrate league victory
Some 35,000 Ajax fans gathered in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Sunday evening to celebrate the club’s fourth league title in a row.
A 1-1 draw against Heracles in Almelo was enough to give the Amsterdammers their 33rd league title.
Although the gathering at the Arena passed off peacefully, there were dozens of arrests elsewhere. Some 30 fans who wrecked the train bringing them back from Almelo were arrested in Utrecht.
Later in the evening, around 50 were arrested in central Amsterdam, police said.
Ajax has been banned from celebrating victory in the city centre since 2011, when hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage was caused.
Meanwhile, riot police were brought in to restore order in Rotterdam where supporters of Turkish club Fenerbahçe were celebrating their victory in the Turkish premier league.
Up to 200 fans had gathered on the Hofplein and Coolsingel. There was one arrest, police said.
