A quarter of home owners expect to be in debt if they move home

One in four people planning to move home within the next two years expects to end up owing money on their mortgage, according to research by a financial services website.

People who bought their home recently are most likely to be affected by negative equity. However, one in seven people who have had their property for 10 years expect to be unable to raise enough when selling their home to pay off their debt.

A large majority of the 500 people questioned by Wijzer in Geldzaken have an interest-only mortgage and have paid nothing off their mortgage debt.
