The Netherlands sealed its supremacy in long track speed skating at the Sochi Winter Olympics on Saturday, taking the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s team pursuit.

Sven Kramer, Jan Blokhuijsen and Koen Verweij set a new Olympic record of 3 minutes 37.71 as they beat Korea in the final of the men’s event.

In the women’s race, Ireen Wüst, Jorien ter Mors and Marrit Leenstra came in 7.50 seconds ahead of Poland to take the gold. They also set a new Olympic record.

Unlike the other long track events, the team pursuit consists of heats building up to a final between the two fastest teams.

Success

Saturday’s team pursuit victory means the Dutch men long track skaters have won five out of six gold medals – failing only to take the 1,500m, and that by just 0.003 of a second.

In total, the Dutch men have won 13 out of 18 long track speed skating medals, including three clean sweeps.

The women’s events saw Ireen Wüst win a total of five medals – two gold and three silver. The Dutch women took 10 out of 18 medals, including gold in three events, and had a clean sweep in the 1,500m.

Wüst has now won eight Olympic medals in her career – four gold, three silver and one bronze, making her the most successful Dutch Olympic athlete ever.
