Outlet supermarkets open their doors in the Netherlands
A new type of budget supermarket is moving into the Netherlands with a small selection of products at rock-bottom prices, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Tuesday.
Outlet supermarkets such as Mega Food Stunter, Budget Food, Palletvoordeel and Superdeal are offering branded products for well below the prices charged by regular stores, the FD says. So far, at least 15 have opened their doors in the Netherlands.
‘There is an incredible amount of trade,’ says entrepreneur Willem Stam, who set up the Outletsupermarkt Schagen. ‘Smoked sausage which does not sell in summer, Sinterklaas goods in spring, new products which are not a success, I buy them all.’
Retail expert Frank Quix from consultancy group Q&A told the paper the limited supply of products will constrain growth in the sector.
‘Wholesalers, supermarkets and producers are working increasingly efficiently and have fewer left-overs. This means the supply will go down and prices will eventually go up,’ he said.
