Anky van Grunsven’s Olympic medal-winning horse Bonfire dies

Dressage horse Bonfire, who helped Dutch rider Anky van Grunsven to her first gold Olympic medal, has died.

‘My heart is broken. Bonfire is dead,’ Van Grunsven said using the microblogging service Twitter. The horse, who was 30, was put to sleep because of serious health issues following kidney trouble, Dutch media reported.

Van Grunsven won nine national titles, five world cup titles, one world title and one Olympic gold on Bonfire who retired after the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
