A woman who stabbed her 16-year-old daughter to death in January has been jailed for three years, less than half the sentence demanded by the public prosecution department.

The court agreed to the lower sentence, saying the woman was not fully responsible for her actions and had expressed her deep sorrow. One of her daughters also urged the court for clemency.

Chahira ben M killed her daughter Mirjam after stabbing her once in the heart and once in the stomach. The attack followed an angry dispute about her daughter’s behaviour, triggered by a row about messages on her mobile phone.
