The Netherlands may enjoy its first official heatwave in seven years from Sunday, with the temperature set to outstrip 30 Celsius at times, according to weather forecasters.

A heatwave is classed as five successive days with temperatures over 25 Celsius at the De Bilt weather station near Hilversum, or when at least three days are over 30 Celsius.

The hot sunny weather with a gentle easterly wind is set to continue next week. But the chance of smog is also on the rise, the Telegraaf reports. Despite the high temperatures, there is an increasing risk of storms by the end of the week.

However, the heatwave may be coupled with a jellyfish invasion on the North Sea beaches and heath fires, the paper said.

Friday will be warm and sunny but there may be cloud in coastal areas. The temperature will range from 21 Celsius in the north to 28 Celsius inland. Saturday will start cloudy but the sun will win over by the afternoon.
