Dutch railway operator ProRail is planning to install a further 600 km of fencing alongside some of the country’s railway tracks in an effort to keep people off the rails.

Every day, some three hours of delays are caused by people walking along the tracks, ProRail said in a statement. In total, 25% of train delays are due to people on the line.

The state-owned firm also hopes the fences will discourage thieves from stealing copper and make it harder for people to commit suicide by jumping in front of a train.

The project will cost €30m and bring the total amount of fencing to 2,300 km. The Dutch railway network is 7,000 km long, ProRail said.
