Government inspectors are too scared to check the smoking ban is not being flouted in cafes and bars and are now travelling in pairs with police back-up, according to media reports on Thursday.

The food safety body NVWA says inspectors are afraid of agression from cafe owners and clients and have been working in pairs since last year. And before they carry out an inspection, they alert the police who can take action if trouble breaks out.

Parliament says this is unacceptable and is demanding action by the government. MPs will debate the subject on Thursday with junior health minister Martin van Rijn.

The government is planning to tighten the rules on smoking in cafes and bars next year. It is currently permitted in small cafes with no staff but not in larger establishments.
