Netherlands’ oldest man dies
The Netherlands’ oldest man, Tjeerd Epema, has died at the age of 106. Epema took over the title from Arie Vermeulen, who died just two weeks ago on March 16.
Epema died in his sleep at a residential home near Alkmaar, local broadcaster RTV Noord-Holland said. It is not known who is now the country’s oldest man.
The oldest resident is a 110-year-old woman. At the beginning of this year, the Netherlands had 1,940 people aged 100 or older, around half of whom still live independently, according to figures from the national statistics office CBS.
In the 1960s, the Netherlands had fewer than 100 people who had lived for more than 100 years.
