Charitable donations fall, hitting cultural sector hardest

Donations to charity by private individuals and companies fell from €4.7bn in 2009 to €4.25bn in 2011, the NRC reports on Thursday.

The cultural sector was particularly hard hit, according to the research from the VU university’s philanthropic studies group. In total, theatres, museums, orchestras and galleries benefited from €287m in donations in 2011, compared with €454m in 2009, the researchers said.

Cultural donations from companies fell from nearly €300m to €124m, coinciding with a scaling back of government subsidies.
