Double gold for the Dutch in speed skating team pursuit event
Both the Dutch men and women’s teams picked up the gold medal in the team pursuit event at the world speed skating championships in Sochi, Russia on Sunday.
It is the sixth time in seven years the Oranje men have taken the title, over two seconds ahead of Zuid-Korea.
In the women’s event, Canada lost the silver after Christine Nesbitt fell on the last bend.
It is the first time since 1996 that the Netherlands has won six gold medals at the championships.
Clean sweep
Jorrit Bergsma led a Dutch clean sweep in the men’s 10,000 metres at the world speed skating championships on Saturday.
Bergsma took the title just ahead of 5,000 metre title holder Sven Kramer. Bob de Jong completed the all Oranje podium line-up.
In the women’s 5,000 metres Czech skater Martina Sablikova took the title for the sixth time, ahead of the Netherlands Ireen Wüst .
Wüst has taken five medals at the championships; gold in the pursuit, 3,000 and 1,500 and silver in the 1,000 and 5,000.
