Armed robbers who shot dead jeweller jailed for 13, 11 years

Two youths who shot dead a jewellery shop owner during an armed robbery that went wrong have been sentenced to 13 and 11 years in jail.

Ruud Stratmann, 47, was killed during a robbery at his shop in The Hague last April. Police released security camera footage of the incident showing the two suspects, which led to over 50 tip-offs.

Sandro Grigolia, who was 19 at the time, was jailed for 13 years for shooting Stratmann. His accomplice, Ziya Borukcu, was given an 11-year sentence.

A third man, who drove the getaway car, was jailed for five years, as judges ruled he could not be held responsible for the killing.

The sentences are all well below the public prosecution department demands.

Borukcu was arrested following a public appeal from his mother to turn himself in, shortly after the murder. Grigolia fled to Georgia, where he later turned himself in to the Dutch embassy in the presence of several family members.
