Ajax out of Europa League after penalty shoot out
Ajax is out of football’s Europa League after a penalty shootout, the first in the competition’s knock-out stage.
Romanian side Steaua Bucharest managed to overcome a two-goal first-leg deficit to win 2-0 in front of their home crowd. The game then went to penalties, with the Dutch side missing two, giving the Romanians victory.
‘It’s a real shame,’ said coach Frank de Boer after the match. ‘We were the better side and did not have to lose.’
All attention will now be focused on the Dutch domestic competition. Ajax, which won the Dutch title for the past two years, is currently second, three points behind the leaders PSV Eindhoven.
