Queen Beatrix has no plans to hand back some of her salary
Queen Beatrix has no plans to follow the example of Spanish king Juan Carlos and hand back some of her salary because of the economic crisis, the state information service RVD told RTL news on Wednesday.
The RVD says the queen sees ‘no reason’ to reduce the €830,000 annual allowance she receives from the state for carrying out her duties.
Not only has the queen’s salary been frozen in line with that of civil servants, but the economic situation in the Netherlands is not on a par with that of Spain, the RVD said.
Extra costs
King Juan Carlos has accepted a 7.1% pay cut to some €272,000 a year, RTL says.
As well as her basic salary, queen Beatrix is given a further €5m to pay for her staff and equipment.
The first Dutch royal family annual report, published last May, said on top of that comes the cost of the 300 people who work at the queen and crown prince Willem-Alexander’s five residences. This takes the total bill to nearly €39m, excluding security.
Last October, prime minister Mark Rutte told parliament there is ‘no need whatsoever’ to reduce the queen’s allowances and other funding.
Should the queen take a pay cut, or is she simply a civil servant? Have your say using the comment box below.
