Junior justice minister Fred Teeven on Tuesday will introduce a new law that will keep those found guilty of serious violent or sex crimes under life-long supervision after they have served their sentence in prison or psychiatric hospital.

The minister is introducing the law because many of these offenders commit similar crimes years after they have served their sentence, reports the Telegraaf.
According to research by the scientific research and documentation centre WODC, one-third of offenders sent to psychiatric hospital for treatment re-offend within 18 years of their release.
Teeven denies life-long supervision is an increase in the original sentence. ‘It’s of great importance to keep society safe and to stop re-offending,’ he told the Telegraaf. ‘If you take your opportunities after you’ve served your sentence, you will not be bothered by this measure.’
