Satnav maker TomTom to cut 10% of it workforce

Satellite navigation systems maker TomTom said on Thursday it is to cut 10% of its workforce – some 457 jobs – as part of a major overhaul to boost efficiency and cut costs.

In total, 255 people face compulsory redundancy, half of them in the Netherlands.
TomTom is also reorganising its research and development activities, the company said in a statement.
The pending overhaul was announced in October, when TomTom published its third quarter figures, showing a 10% drop in sales to €336m, compared with the same period in 2010.
The company said at the time the reorganisation is necessary to reflect changes in the market and the switch towards inbuilt systems.
