Amsterdam to host 2016 European athletics championships
The European 2016 outdoor athletics championships are to be held in Amsterdam, the European athletics federation in Helsinki announced on Friday.
Amsterdam beat off Istanbul and Spit to host the event. It is the first time the Dutch capital has hosted the outdoor games. The indoor championships took place in Rotterdam (1973) and The Hague (1989).
The games will be based around the stadium where the 1928 Olympic Games were held.
The city hopes the European championships will help boost its campaign to host the 2028 Olympics.
