GroenLinks in Rotterdam concerned at illegal immigrant hunt
City councillors for left-wing green party GroenLinks in Rotterdam have asked justice minister Ivo Opstelten to elaborate on his plans to make the city a testing ground for a campaign to round up illegal immigrants.
According to Trouw, Opstelten wants to issue the city’s police force with special equipment which will allow them to take fingerprints on the spot and compare them with a database of legal immigrants.
‘Is it the case that everyone in Rotterdam who does not look like Henk and Ingrid [the archetypal white voter] will soon be liable to be stopped for a police check?’ local GroenLinks leader Arno Bonte is quoted as saying in the paper.
Earlier, MPs from the Liberal democratic party D66 raised its doubts about the checks. In particular, the party wants to know on what legal grounds people can be asked to give their fingerprints.
