Cumulative effect of cuts will hit some very hard: Amsterdam council

The cumulative effect of government cuts on grants and services to families and the young will seriously disadvantage some groups, according to research by Amsterdam city council.

City social services chief Lodewijk Asscher has written to prime minister Mark Rutte urging him to reconsider some of the plans in the run up to this month’s budget presentation.
Asscher wants the prime minister to commission research into the total effect of the cuts because, he says, no-one has a comprehensive overview.
In particular, 4,000 families and 19,000 youngsters will be particularly badly affected, the city council research shows.
For example, 10,000 youngsters with a slight handicap and psychiatric problems will be hit by spending cuts affecting social workers, help with finding work, special education, grants to help the handicapped live normal lives and social security for the young handicapped.
‘They will lose out on all fronts,’ Asscher says.
