Make queen’s role ceremonial, says PVV
Geert Wilders’ PVV is planning to introduce draft legislation into parliament to remove the queen as head of government.
The bill will be ready before the summer and would reduce queen Beatrix’s role to that of a ceremonial monarch.
At the moment, Beatrix is technically head of the government and plays a mediating role in the formation of new coalition cabinets.
Prime minister Mark Rutte told the AD he did not support the plan because it would create a ‘dummy monarchy with no flavour’.
However, a number of parties, including the Socialists, left wing greens GroenLinks and the D66 Liberals do favour a purely ceremonial monarchy, the paper said.
