Hanneke Sanou wonders what the PR team behind the Christian Democrat’s provincial election campaign launch were thinking about.

The political parties have started their campaigns this weekend. A lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes.
At CDA party headquarters, planning went on until the early hours.
PR person 1: So what are we going to do, this Saturday? It’s got to be something big and dramatic, something that says ‘It’s CDA and it’s here!’
PR person 2: Fireworks?, an elephant with the CDA logo on its back?
PR person 1: No, the SP is kicking off at Burger’s Zoo. You don’t want to exaggerate the animal bit, voters aren’t stupid. They won’t be taken in by that cuddly, new born tiger Roemer will be posing with.
PR person 2: Hammer head shark.
PR person 1: Sorry?
PR person 2: ‘Burger Zoo welcomes two hammer head sharks’, it said in the paper. It’s hardly a vote winner.
Both men snigger.
PR person 1: But seriously, what can we do? Maxime will be on the phone soon and we haven’t got a thing. What was our slogan again?
PR Person 2 (resignedly): ‘Straight from the heart’.
PR Person 1: A song! We’ll do a kicking off song. Straight from the heart, we’re all straight at CDA, heart, we attack your heart, no, not good with all those elderly voters..think, man, think!
PR Person 2: How about we just do what we always do and release a load of balloons on a square somewhere. That way everybody will be happy.
PR Person 1: Brilliant. Get me a 1000 balloons for tomorrow!
PR Person 2 (gets busy on the phone): They’re out of green balloons but they still have lots of white and some heart shaped Valentine ones.
PR Person 1: Bloody GroenLinks got there before us! Valentine? OK, if we must.
