Tax inspectors visit prostitutes

Tax inspectors are visiting 3,000 of Amsterdam’s prostitutes to find out how many clients they see each day and how much they earn.

This year for the first time prostitutes are being required to pay income tax but the tax service has no idea how to calculate how much is owed.
‘This action is designed to change that,’ a spokesman for the finance ministry told the Parool.
Until now, prostitutes were exempt from income tax on ‘humanitarian grounds’. Now Amsterdam council is taking tough action against illegal prostitution, the tax service has decided to view legal prostitutes as ‘hardworking freelancers’.
