Sanouisms: A Royal clear out
Hanneke Sanou wonders what the queen might find while clearing out her mother’s attic.
Beatrix: We will just have to do it, Margriet. It’s the archives. You said you didn’t have room for them, I certainly don’t want them so there’s only one possibility left, mummy’s attic and we will have to clear it. Get your gloves on, nobody’s been here in ages.
What’s this?
Margriet: Give it here. It looks like a, oh my God it’s a shrunken head! That must have come from one of mummy’s trips to Indonesia! We’ll have to bury it or give it to the embassy or something.
Beatrix (bumping into a load of old sherry bottles) ..ah, that’s mummy’s diet, remember? It didn’t work of course.
Margriet: Don’t be mean. You’re always mean.
Beatrix: I am mean because I am queen. It’s my prerogative.
Margriet: You were always mean even when you were not a queen.
Beatrix: Stop it. All that old stuff is getting to you. Do you want this Van Meegeren?
Margriet: Look, your old schoolreports..’must try harder’. That’s one for the archives.
Beatrix: Don’t you dare. Look at this painting, it’s ghastly. How on earth does that robe stay in place. Very poorly executed. It says To my dear Bernie, with love Evita on the back.
The sisters look at each other for a moment
Beatrix: Lock that door, Margriet. I think I may have some space at Soestdijk after all.
