The Brand New Old Boys’ Network
A new wind is not blowing through the parliamentary complex, writes Greg Shapiro.
As leaked in De Telegraaf – and now De Volkskrant – it seems we’ve got a new Dutch Cabinet ready.
True, there are some new features: a couple of ministries will be dropped, and some titles will swap around. But the big threat of the PVV taking over the government is apparently not happening.
Not literally anyway. It’s like CDA leader Maxime Verhagen has been saying all along. As his party rebelled against the influence of Geert Wilders and the PVV, Verhagen insisted: ‘It’s not so different – it’s basically business as usual!’
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Rutte will be the new Prime Minister. Verhagen will be the Deputy, and he’ll also move from Foreign Affairs to Economic Affairs. Keeping their posts will be Finance Minister De Jager & Social Affairs Minister Donner.
Yes, there’s a new wind blowing through government! Can you feel it? …Me neither.
Minister Donner in particular is a curious case. He’s basically in charge of labor relations, including issues like: when companies can fire people. This is the position he has held since the deadly fire at Schiphol Prison, which he presided over as Justice Minister, and for which most ministers would have been fired.
Instead of being fired, he’s now in charge of firing other people. And – now that there’s a brand new cabinet – he’s one of the few who (again!) keeps his job.
Topping the Undemocratic Cake is the man who’s hinted to lead the new Safety Ministry: Ivo Opstelten.
‘But wait -’ you may say…
‘…Isn’t that the same coalition guy, who was in charge of impartially putting together an impartial opinion on the best government, impartially?’
YES! Mr. ‘Fair and Unbiased’ just landed himself a new minister. Clearly, something is rotten in the state of DenHaag. But it smells just the same as it did all along.
It’s true, Harry Potter is gone. But the forces of darkness are not taking control of the Ministry. It’s just the same old forces of darkness that have been in there for years.
