Eberhard van der Laan to be Amsterdam’s new mayor

Former housing and integration minister Eberhard van der Laan is Amsterdam city council’s nominee to replace Job Cohen as mayor.

Cohen stood down earlier this year to take over as Labour party leader.
Van der Laan, who turns 55 on Monday, was a city councillor from 1990 to 1998 and is a founding partner of the Kennedy Van der Laan law firm.
Every Amsterdam mayor since 1946 has been a Labour party supporter.
However, VVD member Annamarie Jorritsma, currently mayor of Almere, was a close second to Van der Laan, sources told the Volkskrant.
His appointment still has to be formally approved by the queen.
