Tight security in Amsterdam for Remembrance Day

Amsterdam police have been given extra powers to stop people entering the special security area around Amsterdam’s war memorial on Dam square ahead of this evening’s Remembrance Day ceremony, the Parool reports on Tuesday.

Thousands of people are expected to turn up in the capital as the queen lays a wreath to honour all those who have died in conflicts from World War II onwards.
There will also be a two-minute silence at 8pm.
Parts of the Amstel, where the traditional Liberation Day concert takes place on May 5 will also be closed off to normal traffic, the paper says.
Ceremonies to remember the dead will take place all over the country on Tuesday evening.
