AZ is now 11 points clear of Twente after a 3-1 victory over Tilburg’s Willem II.
Amsterdam’s Ajax lost 4-1 to Arnhem’s Vitesse and is now 14 points behind AZ, prompting a protest by supporters.
Several dozen fans surrounded the players’ bus on its return to Amsterdam, leading manager Marco van Basten to agree to meet supporters to discuss the team’s poor performance since the winter break. Ajax has just four points from its past five matches.
PSV Eindhoven beat Volendam 5-3 and is just one point behind Ajax.
Rotterdam’s Feyenoord drew 0-0 against FC Groningen and remains 12th.
