Record year for lifeboat rescues
The Dutch lifeboat association KNRM carried out a record 1,922 rescues in 2008 bringing 3,259 people and 82 animals to safety.
The association, which was founded in 1824, saved its 75,000th drowning person last year.
Most of the call-outs were to yachts in trouble. Last year there were 694 such cases, up from 628 in 2007.
