Traffic deaths down in 2007
The number of traffic deaths in the Netherlands fell to 791 last year, 20 fewer than in 2006, reports the national statistics office CBS on Thursday.
However the number of young people between 15 and 20 who were killed in road accidents, especially moped drivers, has increased.
But old people are still the most likely to die in road accidents, said the CBS. Last year 15 in 100,000 people over the age of 80 were killed in traffic last year, three times the figure for the population as a whole, said the CBS.
The government wants to bring the number of deaths caused on the roads down to 580 by 2020.
