System failure causes road tunnels to close

Tough measures laid down in the new laws on road tunnel security are causing chaos on the A73 in Swalmen and Roermond, reports the Telegraaf on Monday.

If the security system fails the tunnels close automatically.
On Monday morning the tunnel in Swalmen closed for half an hour creating a long traffic jam. On Sunday the Roermond tunnel closed suddenly causing long delays, the paper reports.
A spokesman for road management organisation Rijkswaterstaat told the paper that the security systems had been thoroughly checked and he did not know if the failures were caused by teething troubles. ‘System failures and tunnel closures are unpredictable,’ he said.
The other older tunnels on Dutch roads have several years to come into line with the new tunnel law.
