Bos calls for more responsibility on top pay
Companies are cutting their own throats by being greedy and top salaries should be kept under control, finance minister Wouter Bos told a conference of business leaders on Saturday, reports the Volkskrant.
Bos told the conference that company greed makes people more uncertain and irritated by the speed of globalisation. This will make them want to vote for parties on the extreme right or left who have nothing to offer business, he said.
According to Bos, transparent salary scales, a clear relationship between salary and performance, a ceiling on bonus packages and the avoidance of any hint of personal interest during takeovers are the answer.
He told delegates he does not want to bring in new legislation. ‘If you take responsibility, I can show there is no need for a new law,’ the Volkskrant quotes him as saying.
