Problems
Perhaps all self-respecting Poles, Slovaks, Estonians, Lithuanians and every one else from eastern and central Europe should leave the Netherlands now while the going is still good.
Sidelines has said it before – Poles are the new Moroccans, and the evidence is mounting.
First we had the ‘stealing our jobs’ fears – conveniently ignoring that Poles and other eastern Europeans earn miserly wages picking asparagus and doing all the other tedious and badly-paid food industry jobs the Dutch turned their noses up at.
Then recently we had MPs saying that eastern Europeans should be forced to go on compulsory integration courses and learn how to be proper parents – conveniently forgetting that you can’t actually discriminate against your fellow Europeans.
Now it is the turn of a Rotterdam city council executive to start ranting about all the problems being caused by, yes, eastern European immigrants. They are apparently causing a nuisance by settling in run-down areas and living in overcrowded conditions.
None of this is the councils’ fault for failing to tackle poor housing and urban depravation in the first place, of course.
Still, if we keep it up like this, no one from eastern Europe will want to come and live here anyway. Problem solved.
