French casino attacks Dutch monopoly

French casino group Compagnie Financière Régionale (CFR) has made a formal complaint to the European Union about the Dutch state’s monopoly on gambling.

The CFR wants a licence to operate a casino in Bergen op Zoom but has been thwarted by the Dutch courts.
The courts have backed the Dutch government’s position that its monopoly enables it to combat criminality in gambling and reduce addiction. European internal markets commissioner Charlie mcCreevy has already condemned the Dutch position.
