An awful lot of people seem to have gotten themselves in a tizzy about the horse chestnut tree that Anne Frank wrote about while in hiding from the Nazis during WWII.

‘Our chestnut tree is in full blossom. It is covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year…’, Anne wrote on May 13, 1944. The tree, in a nearby garden, is infested with honey fungus and, says the Centrum borough council, is in such imminent danger of blowing over that it should be cut down.
Other experts say the tree still has three big main roots, and is as firmly anchored in its place as the Eiffel Tower.They in turn accuse the council of not being interested in any other opinions and are planning legal action.
The Anne Frank foundation itself says it is staying out of the row. ‘We do not get involved in technical discussions,’ a spokesman told the Volkskrant.
Some locals even mutter that it is enjoying the publicity. ‘One email from the foundation and the money to keep the tree will flood in,’ one neighhour pointed out darkly in the Volkskrant.
